Centuries ago in Transylvania, a moonlit train became the stage for a deadly chase. Disguised Dracula (Adam Sandler) and his monster friends were exposed by vampire hunter Van Helsing (Jim Gaffigan) wielding a single matchstick. When the cunning count transformed into a mouse to lure his nemesis into a tunnel trap, little did he know this feud would span generations.
In present-day Hotel Transylvania, manager Mavis (Selena Gomez) calms a nervous bride with "the one true zing" philosophy, only for the ceremony to descend into chaos courtesy of a giant puppy. At the reception, the widowed vampire lord's panicked escape from dancing with Frankenstein's cousin reveals his century-old heartache.
A luxury cruise to the Bermuda Triangle promises relaxation, but Dracula's complaint about "a floating hotel" vanishes when he locks eyes with Captain Ericka (Kathryn Hahn). Unbeknownst to the smitten vampire, the fiery redhead is Van Helsing's great-granddaughter, plotting with her cyborg ancestor to unearth an Atlantis artifact that could annihilate monsterkind.
The underwater pursuit sequence shines as a visual feast. Ericka's submarine stake attack falters when she witnesses Dracula's playful family moments; her garlic-laced guacamole assassination attempt backfires with comedic flatulence. Their trap-dodging waltz through Atlantis ruins turns sinister when Mavis photographs what appears to be a murder attempt.
The climax erupts in dubstep mayhem. As Van Helsing's demonic score awakens the Kraken, Ericka's midair rescue on the giant puppy's back shatters generations of hatred. When a human DJ tames the beast with "Macarena", even the mechanized hunter can't resist dancing - culminating in Dracula's life-saving act of mercy.
The film crescendos on the hotel rooftop. Ericka, who once declared "monsters and humans don't mix", now stammers through Dracula's proposal. With Frankenstein's arm as ring bearer and Invisible Man's bow-tie bouquet, this cross-species fairytale finds its perfect ending.
[Trivia Spotlight] Director Genndy Tartakovsky revealed the Kraken's dance moves were inspired by Squidward's quirky grooves, while Atlantis' casino design pays homage to Pirates of the Caribbean's sunken grandeur.
